Monster Truck – The completed cake (Part 3 or 3)

June 4, 2011 / Jessica / Cakes, Featured Tutorials, General, Jessica Harris Cakes, Tutorials / 32 Comments
Here it is…my son’s 4-year monster truck cake!
This cake turned out to be quite fun! I’m happy with the end result!! The bottom tier is chocolate cake with Reeses peanut butter cup butter cream. The top tier is vanilla cake with Butterfinger butter cream. Both were SO yummy! The checkerboard pattern was created with edible images because I wanted it to look clean and graphic. I also had the “Happy Birthday Easton” sign made with edible images too. The mud is chocolate ganache! – YUM!

I loved how the flames turned out…that was my favorite part! To do that, I rolled out long ropes of red and orange modeling chocolate and placed them together on the counter. I used my fingers and rubbed them together up and down a bit so that I wouldn’t have a straight line between the two colors. I then rolled it to the thickness I wanted and used the template I created to cut out the flames. I put the strip on some wax paper so I could move it around without it breaking apart, then laid it up onto the cake…voila! – flames!!
Here is the template I created…you can use it!

I also did a tutorial for the tires and the truck…click here for the tires, and here for the truck.

Also, stay tuned for the upside down frosting technique how-to video I finished!! I’m editing it a bit but will hopefully have it up on the blog by tomorrow! It’s so cheesy…but you’ll get the idea! LOL!!

Jessica, this cake is super cute. I love it!
Did you use marshmallow fondant? It is sooooooo flawless. You are so gifted!

Cassy Benoit: Yes, I used marshmallow fondant mixed with modeling chocolate for the blue and green tiers. Although, BIG lessons learned: make sure you use water when melting the marshmallows…I used crisco to try something new and the consistency of the fondant radically changed!!!!! So, follow the recipe like it’s called out!

Hi Jessica, I love your creations, you are awesome! Just a quick quest…the checkerboard is a printed image? how you attached the paper to fondant? Could I also attach printed images (in paper) to buttercream frosting? Thank you so much!

      Thank you!

Yes, it’s a printed image. I used a little crisco on the fondant then laid the image on top and pressed gently so as not to smear the ink. I don’t think I’d put it directly on buttercream without it being put on fondant first. If it gets moist, the ink will star to bleed.

      Blessings!

    Hi Jessica,

I love the flames and would like to try.
With the choco model, can we prepare it ahead? or should we make and attach to the cake on the same day?..If we prepare it ahead..can we just leave it outside or put in the fridge? I never work with choco modelling and would like to try it. Is the choco modelling better than fondant for this flames? Appreciate your advices!.. Thanks so much!

At the top of this page is a link to “most commonly asked questions”. There is some info there about modeling chocolate. The chocolate itself can be made in advanced, but the flames should be made when you want to put them on the cake or they’ll harden and not bend around the cake without breaking.
      Blessings!

Hi, I’m not sure I fully understand how you did the flames. I’m doing a hot wheels cake and wanted to do the flames. Is it fondant? Or chocolate? If you could maybe explain further. And your cake is amazing
    Thank you

I just rolled two colors of modeling chocolate together so there was a bit of a fuzzy edge between the colors. I then laid the template on top and cut it out with an exacto knife. Then, turn it over and onto the cake and wrap it around the cake. Have fun!

I wrote you on 10/27 asking about how to do the flames. And thanks to your response well I figured it out and used your template on my hot wheels cake. I used a smaller version, but they came out awesome. I did use modeling chocolate. So much better then fondant. I’m not sure how to send or post a picture so you can see it. I’d love to share it with you
    Thank you so much

I made this monster truck cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. I made some modifications to suit our needs and number of people attending the party. It turned out perfectly!! This tutorial was absolutely perfect in helping to give my baby boy the best cake ever and without the pricey cost. He loved it and everyone at the party kept asking what bakery I used Easily a $300 cake that I made for $50. This was my first time making a cake like this and I can’t believe how well it turned out. Thank you Jessica!!!

The flags are just paper I found at a craft store. Cut out some diamonds and folded them over on a string to be triangles. Super simple!
