How to make a chevron cake

September 13, 2012 / Jessica / Cakes, Craftsy, Featured Tutorials, General, Jessica Harris Cakes, Tutorials / 36 Comments
I love love love graphics!!
The only problem is some graphics are almost impossible to create on a cake!! – until now!!
I have seen this offset chevron design only once on a pillow.  I LOVED how unique it was.  Chevron…but with a twist!  Now, how do you put this on a cake and get all the diagonals even, straight and offset??  With my fondant transfer technique that I invented!!If you’d like to know how to make this cake and my signature flower, it’s all in my new Craftsy Class, “Clean and Simple Cake Design”.  You can click HERE for more information!

Blessings!

I have been using thus technique since I read it on the hot air balloon cake you did. It works everytime! And I stick my design to the cake with shortening instead of gum glue. I learned this trick from Sharon Zambito of SugarEd Productions. This way, if I make a mistake, I can just peel it off. Thanks for all your tutorials!

      Thanks!

I purchased it at Joann’s Fabrics. Any fabric store should carry them.

I love ALL your cakes, so perfect and so brilliantly created! I really want to try your wax paper technique but what would you suggest as an alternative to crisco? Because I live in the UK and we dont have it here…(also something suitable for vegetarians)
Thank you so much and keep up the great work x

      Thank you!

Anything like crisco/shortening would be great! So, you could use a butter base product or sweetex shortening or lard. No idea about vegetarian stuff…I’m sure they have some alternative to butter…you could use that.

(tried to e-mail this but it came back twice so…here it is!).
    Hey Jessie!

Girl, just wanted to say that you inspire me. I’ve been an online business
for 9 years now and I’ve always asked God to use my business to bless
others. I just began using a Blog not long ago but I was mostly on FB, in
the past few weeks I’ve began only using my Blog and posting on my fan
page from there and I like it so much better (got rid of my personal FB
also because I got tired of seeing too much inappropriate post and
    blocking friends…and family).

But…as far as business, I’ve probably given away more than I’ve sold and
just by reading your blog I’m encouraged to step out in faith and create
cakes for those who otherwise couldn’t afford them. But unfortunately
unlike yourself…I can’t afford to do it all for free (got a loving but
    cheap husband :-).

So thanks again and keep doing what your doing! You are SO right, it is
much better to give than to receive. Like Charles Stanley says: “Giving
people are joyful people” which is probably why I’m happy 97% of the time,
it’s just that joy of the Lord and knowing that He is always got your
back. And most importantly “What God Requires…He WILL supply” :-).

    God Bless!

They are just single blade razors. I got mine at Michael’s. Any craft store should have them. They’re in a little box with all the exacto knife stuff!

Hi Jessica! you´re incredibly talented and generous by sharing important techniques. I´m from Argentina and I´d like to let you know we usually cover our cakes with ” dulce de leche” before using the fondant, it´s quite a bit different from ganache or buttercream. I wanted to ask you if I put the cake in the fridge, then… won´t it get wet? It happended to me trying to get better edges…and the fondant became sticky and brillant before I could work with the edges. Do you have the same problem? Is it normal? Once again thank you a lot for sharing your knowledge. I obviously adore your cakes!

Hi Jessica! This cake is so unique it would knock anyone’s socks off! Do you by chance have a tutorial on how you made the flower on this cake?

LOL! You are not the first person to ask me that! I guess I need to do one!

The flower is made with shell shaped petals that I frilled using the ball tool. I arranged them in a shallow bowl and attached each petal to the next with melted chocolate. I kept a piece of wax paper at the bottom so the chocolate wouldn’t stick to the bowl and I couldn’t get it out. The wax paper peels right off when the chocolate dries. I then rolled a whole bunch of fondant balls to stack and use for the center.

I hope that’s as clear as mud!

      Blessings!

No that makes perfect sense. Thank you for clarifying how you made the flower! One more question about that, how did you secure it to the back? Also, are the stripes on this cake done with fondant or molding chocolate? Would molding chocoloate work?

Modeling chocolate would be much easier but I used fondant to show it can be done super easily without stretching/tearing.

If you want to mount that flower, you can cut away some of the cake, add some melted chocolate and press it into that little hole you made. Or, you can take a ball of fondant the same color as the flower and press it to the top corner of the cake so the top of it has the same contour shape as the back of the flower, then, use melted chocolate to mount it to that ball of fondant that’s been squished onto the cake. I hope that helps!

Hi Jessica! haha as much as I want to replicate that technique.. I just couldn’t hehe but I know with practice i can make those stripes with cleaner and distinct lines. If you can see here http://cakebug.blogspot.com/2012/10/despicable-me-cake.html the fondant stretched a bit which I know is my fault. Do you think modelling chocolate would be easier to work with thatn fondant?

Super cute cake! If you’re doing horizontal stripes, just cut them out right on the wax paper so you don’t have to transfer them and they don’t stretch. Yes, modeling chocolate is MUCH easier to work with and doesn’t stretch when you let it sit for a couple minutes!

      Blessings!

Yes, for smaller panel projects you can use parchment paper (though it doesn’t work quite as well) and you can also use cellophane!
